Hearing for Man Accused of Fatally Shooting Firefighter Postponed

Patrick O'Connor, 23, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and said the shooting death of his childhood friend David Atherton

A probable cause hearing was postponed Wednesday for the man accused of shooting and killing a Stoneham, Massachusetts, firefighter while playing with a gun.

Patrick O'Connor, 23, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and said the shooting death of his childhood friend David Atherton, 23, was an accident.

Initial investigation suggests the two were drinking and passing a gun back and forth, pointing it at each other. Officials believe the shooting was a result of this behavior.

O'Connor was charged with involuntary manslaughter, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and discharging a firearm.

Atherton was buried with full military and fire department honors.
