Investigation Into Fatal Shootings Continues

The second and third homicides of the year in Chelsea, Massachusetts, happened about an hour apart, but police do not believe they are related.

The second and third homicides of the year in Chelsea, Massachusetts, happened about an hour apart. Police say they are making significant progress in their investigations.

They would appreciate any additional help from the public.

There were no words to start the Chelsea City Council meeting, but instead, a moment to reflect two days after the fatal shootings in the city.

The first was a stray bullet that hit 35-year-old Catherine Gomez as she looked out a second-floor window of a home on Shawmut Street a few minutes after 12 a.m. Saturday.

Two groups of people were fighting outside.

Police do not think this mother of three children was the intended target.

They want to speak with two men seen in a surveillance photo, called persons of interest.

Neither is in custody as of Monday night.

And then, just over an hour later on Spencer Avenue, 36-year-old Juan Rodriguez of Lynn was shot and killed inside the French Club after an argument.

Police do not think the two murders are related.

At council chambers, discussion from the few in the public who attended was about putting an end to this senseless violent crime.

"Very disturbing that we had two murders, one after another, within an hour, and this is what we have for outrage in our community," said community activist Henry Wilson. "I don't want to have another black eye in our city. And I think what happened this weekend puts a little shine on our city and I don't want to have that."

Police say tonight that surveillance was very helpful and again, that they are making significant progress in both cases.

No arrests have yet been made.
