The West Haven man charged with killing his wife admitted to strangling her and waited several hours before calling 911, according to a police report.

Carlos Pinedo called 911 around 3:45 p.m. Sunday and told a dispatcher his wife had fallen and was on the floor. According to police, Pinedo then told the dispatcher he had strangled his wife and that she was not breathing.

Police and EMS arrived at Pinedo's home at 1014 Campbell Avenue and found the victim, 38-year-old Catherine Pinedo, on the floor of a bedroom. Paramedics told police it appeared the victim had been dead for several hours.

Detective spoke with Pinedo, 44, who told them he got into an argument with his wife Sunday morning, got a knife and planned to stab her to death, according to police. He said his wife was able to stop him and he eventually turned the knife over to her, but then grabbed her neck and forced her to the floor, the police report stated. He told detectives he strangled his wife until she fell unconscious, police said.

Pinedo said he tried to perform CPR his wife, but was unsuccessful. He admitted he waited several hours before calling 911, according to the police report.

Pinedo faced a judge on Monday and was held on $2 million bond.

The couple had two children together, but they were not home at the time of the incident, police said.
