Mass. Governor, MBTA Head Meet Amid Complaints

As more problems plague the MBTA, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker met face-to-face with the GM Beverly Scott, who announced her resignation Wednesday.

They discussed clearing bus routes and bus stops, and they toured the Operations Center.

But even while critical of the MBTA, Gov. Baker said he had nothing to with Scott's resignation.

Scott did not emerge for a public view at the T's operations center after meeting for the first time with Baker. Baker did, briefly, not commenting about her abrupt decision to resign, announced Wednesday just hours after the Board of Transportation threw its full confidence her way.

"It was a good meeting with a healthy exchange of views," Gov. Baker said.

The T's woes and aging infrastructure leading to calamitous recent travel for commuters are well-documented.

What isn't well-documented is why Scott made the surprising decision to resign effective April 11.

She released a statement after the meeting which did not shed any additional light on her own mindset.

"The Governor was very focused, and we were pleased to share information that will help him make decisions as we chart a course for improving public transportation," it read. "I'm convinced that today’s meeting will be remembered as the start of something very good."

Gov. Baker, speaking later at the airport about the meeting, said they didn't delve into the sudden change at the helm of public transportation.

"Today was about the future. We didn't talk at all about that. We discussed the issues that are facing the T as of today. And facing the bus routes," Gov. Baker said.

And while he acknowledged the challenges with the coming weekend blizzard, asked if people should ride the T with confidence? There was no ringing endorsement.

"I think we'll wait and see with respect to all of those things. That's going to be based a lot more on available information as we learn more about this storm, when it's going to land and what people's recommendations are about that," Gov. Baker added.

While he has said he talked several times a day with Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack, Baker did say that, in hindsight, he should have met with Scott before their meeting today.
