Officials to Discuss Long-Term Plan for Closed Boston Bridge

The city of Boston and Massachusetts Department of Transportation will meet Thursday to assess the long-term plan for the Long Island Bridge

The city of Boston and Massachusetts Department of Transportation will meet Thursday to assess the long-term plan for the Long Island Bridge after it was closed due to a failed inspection.

According to Boston Police, the bridge to Long Island in Boston Harbor was closed around 4 p.m. Wednesday after people on the island were bused off.

All of those people have been evacuated from the island and are staying at temporary shelters in Boston.

The goal of the long-term plan is to meet the needs of the people who live on this island and use the island's social services, all of whom are homeless Bostonians who live in a shelter on Long Island.

On a typical night, Long Island is home to approximately 440 people as well as approximately 250-300 people who receive services through the Boston Public Health Commission and other nonprofit organizations that operate programs on Long Island. Approximately 150 people work on Long Island during a typical day.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh made the decision to close this bridge out of an abundance of caution after long-time concerns about the structural integrity of the bridge.

The bridge closure will not affect anybody's commute into or out of Boston

The city says the bridge will be closed for an extended period of time.
