Police Officer Stabbed in South Hadley, Massachusetts

Police arrested and charged a Holyoke man with the stabbing of a police officer Friday evening at a Dunkin' Donuts in South Hadley, Massachusetts, authorities said.

Jeffrey Torres, 29, was charged with armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

According to authorities, Torres allegedly stabbed the officer in the neck when the officer entered the store at about 7 p.m. in response to a reported disturbance.

The Northwestern District Attorney's Office said the officer fired three shots, hitting the suspect twice.

Both men were transported to Baystate Medical Center. The officer was treated and released. Torres underwent surgery and remains hospitalized. He is expected to survive, according to the district attorney's office.

Torres will likely be arraigned Monday in the hospital or in Eastern Hampshire District Court, depending on his medical condition.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating the incident.
