Police Warn of More Dangerous Drug Disguised as Oxycodone

    Salem Police Department

Authorities in Massachusetts are warning drug users of a highly potent opioid being disguised as typical oxycodone pills.

Police have determined that counterfeit oxycodone being distributed in Salem is actually fentanyl.

While oxycodone, itself, is an opiate, fentanyl can be up to 50 times as strong as heroin. This poses a major threat to users who believe they are taking a much less potent drug.

"Salem Police are warning citizens to be aware that the fake does contain enough potency to cause death," the department said in a statement.

Unless drugs are prescribed by position, police are asking users to question their legitimacy.

Anyone with questions or information about the counterfeit drugs is asked to call Salem Police at (978) 745-9700.
