Stoneham Police say they will be filing charges against a man who allegedly entered the police station, assaulted an officer and made a bomb threat on Tuesday.
The 35-year-old Stoneham man was taken to a local hospital for a mental health and physical evaluation. His name has not been released by police.
Police said the suspect will be issued a summons to Woburn District Court for issuing a false bomb threat and assault and battery on a police officer.
Around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said a man entered the Stoneham Police Station at 47 Central St. wearing a backpack. He approached the dispatch window in the lobby and made a bomb threat to a police officer at the window. The man then walked away from the window toward a training room where a community group was set to hold a meeting.
Police officers attempted to calm the man, who allegedly tried to strike an officer multiple times. The man was ultimately restrained with the help of pepper spray.
No explosives were found inside the man's backpack. The suspect had also been seen inside Town Hall earlier in the day, but a sweep of the building came up empty.
"Thankfully, the public was never in danger, but the actions of this individual caused considerable concern," Police Chief James McIntyre said. "I commend our officers for bringing this situation to a successful resolution with no one injured and no disruption to the community."
