Public Asked to Keep Away From Seal Pups on Beaches

Close human presence will cause massive stress in the pups

The New England Aquarium has a message for beach-goers this Memorial Day weekend -- stay away from the seal pups.

With summer-like weather having arrived, the Aquarium predicts there will be more visitors on the sand as recently weaned harbor seal pups will come ashore to rest on busy beaches.

The pups can easily draw large crowds, but experts say close human presence will cause massive stress in the pups that badly need their rest to survive.

The New England Aquarium is asking for the public's help in protecting these seals from unintended and unnecessary human harassment.

People and their pets should stay at least 150 feet away from any seal.

The Aquarium says if someone takes a selfie or a picture of their family near a seal on a beach, they are breaking the law.
