The Rhode Island National Guard has a new commander.

Col. Christopher Callahan became the state's 44th adjutant general during a ceremony that Gov. Gina Raimondo presided over at the statehouse on Wednesday.

The Democratic governor has asked Callahan to review safety and security procedures at Rhode Island National Guard centers, including whether to arm guardsmen working at the centers.

A gunman killed four U.S. Marines and a Navy sailor at two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee, last month. Governors in several other states have authorized arming guardsmen or increasing security at their facilities in response to the attacks.

Callahan replaces Maj. Gen. Kevin McBride, who retired in June.

Callahan was promoted to the rank of brigadier general following the military ceremony.
