A wild turkey vulture that managed to get stuck inside a boiler room at the site of a former hospital in Waterville, Maine, has been released back to its natural habitat.

The Morning Sentinel reports the bird was set free Wednesday, a week after it was rescued from the boiler room of the former Seton Hospital.

Bird experts believe the turkey vulture possibly was scouting nesting places when it fell down a smokestack that led to the boiler room.

The bird had been flying around the boiler room for a couple days before the building manager contacted Waterville Animal Control.

Unable to catch the turkey vulture, animal control officer Chris Martinez called Avian Haven to assist in extracting the bird, which then spent time recovering at Avian Haven's rehabilitation center.
