Police say a Vermont special education teacher is accused of fondling a child.

Forty-one-year-old Mark Zizis of Shoreham, Vermont, has been charged with lewd and lascivious conduct with a child. He pleaded not guilty Wednesday in court in Middlebury.

Police said Friday he's accused of fondling a Shoreham boy between the ages of 7 and 8. Investigators did not say how he knew the child but said the alleged victim was not one of Zizis' students.

His lawyer says Zizis denies the charge.

He says he's on leave from his job as a special education teacher at the Chittenden Central Supervisory Union, a job he's held for 11 years.

He's also a martial arts instructor at Green Mountain PPS Inti Ombak.
