Walpole Officers Praised for Quick Decision During Gun Threat

Several Massachusetts police officers are being praised for their quick decision during a recent tense situation.

Walpole Police Chief John Carmichael says he is proud of his officers, after three of them used absolute restraint when a gun was aimed right at them.

"They did everything right in this case," Carmichael explained. "To process everything that's happening so quickly and to respond the way that they did is just amazing."

Officers responded after receiving a call for an unwanted, intoxicated man inside his parent's home.

"The individual was on the bed and had his hands under the blankets," Carmichel said when the officers arrived.

They tried talking to the man, but he wouldn't comply. Police say when the man finally took his hands out of the blanket, he was holding a gun.

Police say he raised it and pointed it at the officers. Without hesitation, one of the officers used a taser on the man and took him into custody.

Carmichael says the situation could have ended very differently.

"The officers had been absolutely justified in this case to use deadly force under these circumstances. I'm just glad they're safe and this individual is safe," said Carmichael.

Police say the man, who they have not identified, was actually holding a pellet gun. He was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Authorities said he will eventually face charges.
