Boston Boy, 9, Survives Shootout

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo, Boston) - Nine-year-old Preston Stephens is a huge Celtics fan and he feels lucky, like their mascot, after a bullet came so close to him Tuesday afternoon it pierced his Rajon Rondo jersey.

Preston, his little sister and their mom Sharon Jackson were leaving their Dorchester apartment to run errands when the third grader went back into his bedroom to get his glasses case.

"As soon as he went in his room, I heard bup, bup, bup, bup, bup - you know, like loud, like close," said Jackson.

"I was standing right there and I heard a gun shot from outside and then I ran and then another gun shot went right in front of me," said Preston. "It felt like I was trapped."

Preston looked down and saw two smoking bullet holes in his number nine jersey, which police now have as evidence in this case.

"I was just amazed that I didn’t get hit and I just felt my stomach and I didn’t see no blood," said Preston. "Then I just ran down the hall and then got down."

His mom said she didn’t believe him at first, but then she saw the plaster sprayed on his bed and the bullet casing lodged in his closet door molding.

"I still don’t believe it because I can’t believe miracles happen," said Jackson.

Jackson says she hasn’t believed in miracles since her brother Jamal was killed on Tremont Street back in 1995.

But now she believes Jamal may have been her son’s guardian angel.

"My son said he felt a force push him back just in the nick of time, so it had to be him, Jamal was looking out for him," said Jackson.

Preston said, "I think it’s just incredible, because I never wanted to die."
