New Hampshire lawmakers are moving to ban the sale and possession of synthetic drugs as the state faces an ongoing drug epidemic.

The House approved a bill aimed at restricting the drugs Wednesday.

A number of cities and towns already ban the sale of synthetic drugs such as spice or bath salts. This bill aims to create a uniform, statewide ban. Supporters of the bill say reactions to synthetic drugs can be unpredictable and dangerous because it's hard to know what's in them.

Opponents say the ban will be hard to enforce because the ingredients can easily be changed.

The bill creates a process for adding new components as formulas changes.

Gov. Maggie Hassan declared a state of emergency after a number of overdoses of synthetic cannabinoid in Manchester.
