Will Officer Darren Wilson Be Indicted?

Attorney Ed Ryan says authorities need to sift through autopsy, witness reports before decision is made

Thursday’s issue of Time Magazine featured the Michael Brown shooting as its cover story. Meanwhile, protesters delivered thousands of signatures on petitions.

Their demands include the immediate resignation of the mayor of Ferguson and the police chief, the immediate removal of St. Louis County prosecuting attorney Robert McCullough from the case, and the immediate dismissal of police officer Darren Wilson.

Attorney Ed Ryan joined NECN to question if Officer Wilson will be indicted.

“We’ve got at least two autopsy reports that have been filed, we’ve got conflicting alleged eyewitness versions of the event. I think that we have to take all of the facts and sift through them. We’ve got to interview all these witnesses and find out what actually transpired between this officer and the deceased,” Attorney Ryan explained. “If it turns out that the deceased was not placing the officer in fear of his life, then the resort to deadly force may well be considered excessive force, and that could constitute a basis for bringing a manslaughter charge.”

The Department of Justice is also investigating the possibility of civil rights charges against Officer Wilson in the case.

“I think that if he was acting intentionally, we wouldn’t be talking about a manslaughter case here. We might be talking about murder charges, but I think it’s early, in terms of what the public knows here, to make a call one way or the other,” Attorney Ryan said.

Additionally, Ryan discussed Dias Kadyrbayev, a friend of the Boston Marathon bomber, and his guilty plea in federal court.
