Buchholz Goes Under Knife

Red Sox pitcher underwent surgery for meniscus in right knee

Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz underwent surgery on his right knee Tuesday, the team confirmed.

Dr. Peter Asnis performed the successful procedure on Buchholz's meniscus at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The Red Sox expect the right-hander to make a full recovery.

The surgery was performed two days after the final game of the regular season, which Buchholz started. The Red Sox failed to make the postseason.

Buchholz had a rough year, posting a 5.34 ERA in 170.1 innings pitched while winning eight games and losing 11. He missed significant time with an injury last year, making just four regular season starts after the All Star break.

In 2013, he had been on par for the best season of his career, finishing 12-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 108.1 innings.

Of the 2013 Red sox' world champion starting rotation, Buchholz is the omly member remaining on the team.

Buchholz's longtime teammate, Jon Lester, will start for the Oakland Athletics Monday night, battling James Shield of the Kansas City Royals. Another former teammate, John Lackey, will pitch in the postseason for the St. Louis Cardinals, the team the Red Sox beat for the title last season.
