Report: New Casinos Will Siphon $570M from Connecticut

The leaders of the Mohegan Tribe and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation say they hope the report illustrates the threat posed by growing competition

A consultant hired by two Connecticut tribes says that new facilities planned in New York and Massachusetts could siphon away $570 million annually in gambling revenue from the state's industry by the end of the decade.

The leaders of the Mohegan Tribe and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation say they hope the report issued Monday by Clyde Barrow illustrates the threat posed by growing competition. The two tribes are supporting legislation that would allow them to jointly run as many as three new casinos to counter the casino projects planned across state lines.

Barrow said at a news conference that by 2019 the tribes' casinos, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, could also lose 5,800 jobs by 2019.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has not indicated whether he will support the measure.
