Dick's Sporting Goods Suspends Sale of Modern Rifles at All Stores

(NECN: Greg Wayland, Danvers, Mass.) - The Sandy Hook shooting has re-opened the debate over gun control.

We heard from the National Rifle Association. In a first response to the tragedy, the NRA released this statement:

“Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting…the NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.”

The NRA will hold a major news conference on Friday in Washington.

Meanwhile, Dick's Sporting Goods is suspending gun sales in its stores nationwide.

All the managers of local Dick’s stores are referring questions to their Pittsburgh headquarters, which says they are suspending sales of modern rifles and at all 500 stores in 44 states, and they have taken all guns off of display in stores in and around Newtown, Conn.

It’s a sensitive gesture during a period of mourning, but look for the gun debate to rage on.

Greg Wayland has more.
