Football Fever at Fenway Park

(NECN: Josh Brogadir, Boston) - Roma beat Liverpool 2-1 at Fenway Park Wednesday evening.

Seeing a sea of Red is what you'd expect at Fenway, but these were supporters of the Reds, as they call them, not the Red Sox.

Football fans gathered around Fenway as part of the ballpark's 100th anniversary, the game we call soccer replacing the two seamers along Lansdowne Street.

With immense crowds, it's almost like the Yankees are in town to play the Sox, only that atmosphere is not friendly.

This is a friendly one - football as only the Europeans know how to play it. Liverpool and Roma, with a combined 205 years of history, are two of the Euro heavyweights that draw upon their years of success and loyal fans from across the globe.

Richard and Rachel Mellors came here from Nottingham, England. In fact, he proposed to her at their stadium, Anfield.

Antonio Iannantuoni and Tino Angeloni are A.S. Roma fans who drove to Boston from Montreal.

Gaurang Gadkari flew in from Chicago just for the game.

So what is it about soccer that brings out that emotion and that passion?

It's not quite Anfield, but Yawkey Way was transformed, complete with the gate inscribed, You'll Never Walk Alone, the Liverpool anthem.

Young Eric Spaulding of Lebanon, N.H. told us Liverpool fans never walk alone.

One of his soccer coaches, Paul Winter, who used to live in Liverpool, has an LFC tattoo and was wearing Liverpool underwear to the match.

International transplants aside, the game hasn't quite caught on in the same way here in the states, though these young guys play for the Liverpool Football Club in Oxford, Mass.

Inside Fenway, Red Sox Owner John Henry also Liverpool's owner waved to the crowd, some of the players stopped to sign autographs for their fans, as did 007 himself, Daniel Craig.

And then it was time for the first kick on the pitch.

As it's been for 765 Red Sox games in a row, this game was sold out, as well.
