Suspect Arrested in Police Officer Stabbing

(NECN: Jennifer Eagan, Danvers, Mass.) - The suspect wanted for the stabbing of a Danvers, Mass. police officer has been arrested.

58-year-old Roy Limbaugh was captured after a motorist contacted State Police to report his car. The motorist saw that a man who appeared to be covered in blood was driving a red Volkswagen Jetta.

Trooper Shawn Cayer responded to the tip and arrested Limbaugh at 7 a.m.

Officer John Melto was stabbed in his neck and on his arm, but his injuries are not life threatening. The 47-year-old officer was conducting surveillance of Limbaugh's home when he was attacked at 5:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Following the assault, Melto drove in his cruiser, possibly in pursuit, but pulled off about a quarter of a mile from Limbaugh's home. Melto called for assistance and officers found him covered in blood, but alert and talking.

Limbaugh will be booked in Randolph and then eventually taken to Salem district court Friday afternoon.
