A New Mexico man faces various charges after pointing a gun at state troopers, prompting one of the troopers to fire their own weapon, during a confrontation in Columbia, according to state police.
Jay Olson, 54, of Bernalillo, New Mexico, faces charges after an incident that started at a motel on Route 66 Tuesday afternoon.
Two state troopers responded to reports of a suspicious incident at the Hop River Motel at 152 Route 66 at 2:57 p.m. Tuesday, according to state police, and found a Pontiac Grand Am that had been reported stolen out of New Mexico.
They said the suspected driver, later identified as Olson, took off on foot when he was approached.
When troopers tried to stop Olson, he pointed a gun at them and one trooper fired a weapon and hit Olson, according to state police.
Olson was taken into custody and transported to Hartford Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Connecticut State Police Detectives from Eastern District Major Crime, Central District Major Crime and the Rockville State’s Attorney Office all responded to the scene.
Olson was charged with criminal attempt to commit assault, criminal possession of a firearm, theft of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, reckless endangerment, and interfering with an officer.
He remains in the hospital and is being held on a $500,000 bond, police said.

The trooper who fired has not been identified and was placed on administrative duty. The Rockville State’s Attorney’s Office and Central District Major Crime Detectives have taken over the investigation.
