Man Charged in Fatal Stabbing of 1-Year-Old Niece

Young child suffered a severe laceration to her stomach

A Connecticut man accused of killing his 1-year-old niece by slashing her abdomen has been ordered held in $2.5 million bail.

Thirty-six-year-old Arthur Hapgood of Waterbury was arraigned Tuesday in Bristol Superior Court on murder and other charges.

Police say Hapgood stabbed Zaniyah Calloway to death while babysitting her and an 11-year-old child at a home in Bristol on Monday evening. Officers responded to the scene after a 911 call and encountered a person running toward them carrying the wounded girl. The other child wasn't hurt.

Police officers gave medical attention to the girl, but she later died at a hospital.

Hapgood was charged after he was treated at a hospital for undisclosed injuries.

Hapgood was represented by the state public defender's office, which declined to comment Tuesday.
