A five-year-old girl who was fatally shot Monday night in Scarborough, Maine, has been identified, as officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
Police say Elise Dorr, of Belfast, was shot around 7:30 p.m. in her grandparents’ home on Milliken Road. She was taken to Maine Medical Center, where she died from her injuries.
“It’s a lot to deal with for any family, considering the age of the victim,” said Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. “Our task now is to figure out exactly what happened, and why.”

Police said the gun has been recovered, but have not disclosed who it belongs to. They said Dorr’s grandparents were not home at the time. She was with parents, Todd and Virigina Dorr, and two older siblings. Both parents have been interviewed by police.
No arrests have been made, and no charges have been announced. McCausland said they are waiting for the Medical Examiner to complete an autopsy report.
“We are crushed. This is awful,” said neighbor Donald Haynes, who used to see Elise playing at her grandparents’ house. “They’re good people. They don’t deserve this.”
A family member who did not want to be identified called this an “unfathomably difficult” time.
