Authorities have closed a bridge to an island in Boston Harbor Wednesday after it failed inspection.
According to Boston Police, the bridge to Long Island in Boston Harbor was closed around 4 p.m. after people on the island were bused off.
Officials with the city of Boston said in a statement the bridge was closed out of "an abundance of caution following long-running concerns about the structural integrity."
There is a year-round shelter on the island that holds 400 beds; Boston officials said about 220-250 people were taken to the South End Fitness Center and Carter Auditorium at Northampton Square, which has been converted into a temporary shelter.
City officials said 300 more beds were set up at a facility on Channel Street; however, these placements are a short-term solution.
Police say repairs need to be made, but they did not have a timetable on how long those repairs will take. City officials said they'll be meeting with MassDOT Thursday to talking about bridge repairs and and longer-term plan.
