Man Accused of Assaulting Package Store Clerk With Ax Handle

A Massachusetts man faced a judge on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a package store clerk with an ax handle.

Charles Meseck, 26, of Webster arraigned on assault and larceny charges in connection with an incident at Hank's Package Store on Main Street in Webster.

Webster police say officers responded to the package store just after 10 p.m. Tuesday for a reported assault and male outside the story carrying what was believed to be a baseball bat and covered in blood.

When police arrived to the package store, they found an injured clerk, who said the suspect, later identified as Meseck, tried to steal a bottle of alcohol.

Meseck allegedly refused to surrender the bottle, and when the clerk produced an ax handle from behind the counter for protection, a scuffle ensued, ending with the clerk being hit with it, according to police.

Police say after they responded to the scene and were treating clerk for his injury, there was another 911 call about a man who asked someone for a ride while they were covered in blood.

Eventually, an officer and a K9 officer were able to track Meseck to a shed next to Mohegan Bowling Alley on Thompson Road, when he was taken into custody.

Meseck was ordered to be held pending a dangerousness hearing by a judge at Dudley District Court.
