Month-Long Canoe Trip Promoting Clean Water Ends

A 69-year-old Massachusetts man has completed his monthlong Berkshires-to-Boston canoe trip to bring attention to the importance of clean water.

Denny Alsop, of Stockbridge, finished his journey on the Charles River on Wednesday. He launched from the Housatonic River in Sheffield on March 21.

The trip was intended to celebrate the progress made in cleaning Massachusetts rivers and highlight the need for continued action. Alsop also wants to draw attention to General Electric's resistance to some terms of a federal cleanup of the Housatonic.

He says although much progress has been made, more needs to be done.

Alsop paddled along 11 rivers on the trip, including the Westfield, Connecticut, Chicopee, Quaboag, Quinebaug, French, Blackstone, Assabet and Sudbury.

Alsop made a similar trip 28 years ago.
