An elementary school in Newton, Massachusetts, was closed Tuesday after the "unexpected passing" of a staff member, according to the district.
Newton Public Schools wrote on its Facebook page Tuesday that there will be no "before or after school care" at Franklin Elementary School after what was initially described as an internal emergency.
The district told families in an email that the "emergency is contained within the school building and does not affect the neighborhoods or roadways."
A spokesperson for the district confirmed later Tuesday that a staff member had died. That staffer was not immediately identified.

Police, medical personnel and the fire department all responded to the school, the district said. School administrators were also on site to address the incident.
Emergency responders have finished their work and gave the district permission to reopen the school for classes on Wednesday. District officials noted that there was no issue with the building and it was safe for students to return.
