A man was fatally shot early Monday morning in Waltham, Massachusetts, putting residents on edge in the usually quiet neighborhood.

The Waltham Police Department responded around 1:30 a.m. to Lyman Street near Faneuil Road for a report of shots fired, according to a news release from Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Waltham Chief of Police Kevin O'Connell.

Officers found a man outside on the sidewalk who had apparent gunshot wounds, authorities said. He was treated on scene and then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.

No arrests have been made so far in this case.

Investigators spent the day collecting evidence from the scene, including a silver car with a bullet hole and a shattered window. They also went door-to-door searching for surveillance video or witnesses. Police K-9 units could also be seen combing the area on Monday as they searched for clues.

Helen Meuse and other residents in the area say they were startled by the early morning shooting in their sleepy Waltham neighborhood.

"Just like you hear it on TV shows, it was bang, bang, bang,” said Meuse, who heard the gunshots.

Meuse said that by the time she looked outside, it was all quiet again.

“There was no noise, no yelling, no cars speeding away, there was nothing to be seen.”

There haven't been any arrests made in the case yet, authorities said.

Ana Rivas says she's counting her blessings after a bullet shattered part of her bedroom window on Lyman Street where she was asleep with her grandchild, saying that it could've hit her head had it entered at a higher angle.

She says her son's truck was in their driveway and was also hit by a bullet. Tow trucks later towed away that pickup truck and a Nissan Altima that was parked on Faneuil Road.

“It sounded like three gunshots, thought maybe it was fireworks and then police came right away," said Christine Jellow, who lives nearby. "Scared. I'm still in shock. I'm still shaking, you know? So close to home."

Another person who lives nearby said she didn't hear or see anything until police came and asked to look at her security camera footage.

"The police were counting them with us," she said of the gunshots. "I think there were eight but we're not super sure, but they were one right after the other."

The investigation remains ongoing into the shooting, and anyone with information has been urged to call Waltham police at 781-314-3550 or Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office at 781-897-6600.
