Man Charged With Drunk Driving After University Student Struck

Police: Driver failed field sobriety test

A Cranston, Rhode Island, man was arrested early Saturday morning on drunken driving charges after he allegedly struck a pedestrian on Narragansett Boulevard.

Eric Churchill, 45, of 102 Columbia Ave., was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in serious bodily injury and refusal to submit to a breath test.

Police said Churchill was driving in the area of 1025 Narragansett Blvd. at about 2 a.m. when he struck a pedestrian crossing the road.

Police said Churchill remained at the accident scene, where the victim, a 25-year-old man, was unconscious and bleeding. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in fair condition.

Churchill failed a field sobriety test and refused to take a breathalyzer test at Cranston Police Headquarters, police said.

The victim is an international student at Johnson and Wales University.
