One person was injured during a fire at a bakery in East Providence, Rhode Island, Tuesday night.

The incident took place just before 10:30 p.m. at Taunton Avenue Bakery, which is located at 208 Taunton Avenue. Officials responded to reports of an explosion.

The East Providence fire chief told NBC 10 News that one worker was inside the bakery at the time of the explosion. He suffered first and second degree burns on 20 percent of his body. The worker was able to get out of the building, and he was taken to the hospital.

The chief also said they had to find and shut off the gas line. He doesn't think the building's structure is compromised even though a glass exterior wall was blown out.

Nearby buildings were not damaged, yet a neighbor said the situation is “sad.” She referred to the bakery as a popular establishment.

Firefighters were on the roof with a chainsaw. While the city fire marshal and building inspector were at the scene, the state fire marshal was en route around 11:15 p.m. They are working to determine the cause.

Authorities blocked off the surrounding area.
