Police Seek Man Who Threatened Officers With Running Chainsaw

Police are seeking a suspect they allege threatened several officers with a running chainsaw after a fight.

West Greenwich Police Chief Richard Ramsey says police responded Tuesday around 7:20 p.m. to 234 Plain Meeting House Rd. for a report of a disturbance. After police tried to arrest two men, they say 38-year-old James Matteson ran out of a garage carrying a running chainsaw.

Ramsey says officers held Matteson at bay until dropped the saw and ran into the woods. Police were not able to locate him.

Ramsay said that when found, Matteson will be charged with felony assault on uniformed police officers. He also has two outstanding warrants, for failure to appear on a suspended license charge, and felony arson of a vehicle.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact police at 401-397-7191.
