Rhode Island officials are working to add the names of more than 5,000 potential primary voters to the rolls who were caught in an electronic registration snafu.

The Board of Elections voted Wednesday to authorize local canvassers to update voter lists to reflect the registrations. The voters who were affected either registered to vote or changed party affiliation through the state Department of Motor Vehicles website.

Spokesman Paul Grimaldi says the third-party vendor that handles DMV transactions failed to properly transmit the information to the secretary of state.

Voting lists closed a month before the Sept. 12 primary, so the Board of Elections had to authorize cities and towns to reopen voter lists to update them.
