A former Vermont elementary school staffer has pleaded not guilty to embezzling thousands of dollars from a technology equipment fund she set up at the school in 1999.
Kay Marcelle retired from Waitsfield Elementary School in 2012 and closed the fund, which had about $9,000. In 2013, the superintendent of the Washington West Supervisory Union contacted police alleging that Marcelle had taken money from the fund.
The Times Argus reports questions about the fund, however, dated back to 2009, when the principal felt it wasn't meeting accounting standards. A prior principal said the fund had lost its tax-exempt status and should have been "banished."
The 60-year-old Marcelle told police there were records for the fund, but said she didn't recall where they were.
