Vermont state police say nearly 100 animals are being rescued from squalid conditions at a property in Eden.

Police say they served a search warrant on the property at 10 a.m. Wednesday and found the animals - mostly dogs - living in what they described as "appalling conditions" with no access to fresh water.

One Chittenden County Humane Society worker described the animals' owner as an "overwhelmed rescuer."

Authorities say the owner, who police did not name, is cooperating and has released many of the animals for adoption.

The animals are being taken to an undisclosed location in Chittenden County, where they are being triaged by a team of veterinarians.

The investigation is continuing and authorities did not rule out the possibility of criminal charges.
