Spectacular Weather Draws Vermonters Outdoors

Vermonters savored Thursday's sunny skies and temperatures that reached into the high 60s and low 70s.

Skiers and riders needed sunscreen at the Stowe Mountain Resort, because the warm day meant many of them were in T-shirts or shorts. They were enjoying the last few runs of the season before the destination closes Sunday.

"The sun's bouncing off the snow, you get a nice tan," said snowboarder Nick Dorr.

On Burlington's Church Street Marketplace, outdoor dining was a hot option at lunchtime, with many of the downtown restaurants busy serving patrons outdoors. The Church Street Tavern said it sees a 40 percent business boost when it can serve meals outside.

"Once the patio opens up, it's like a whole new animal," said Andrew Gale of the Church Street Marketplace. "Of course, we all know Vermont weather comes and goes, so we just like to try to take advantage as much as we can."

And at the city's brand-new waterfront skatepark, UVM Freshman Collin Freiheit was one of dozens challenging themselves on all the contours, rails, and ramps.

"There's not a lot of wind. It's sunny, it's warm, it's a great day," Freiheit told necn. "And I have a feeling the summer's going to bring a lot more days like this."
