Vermont 911 System Director Stepping Down

The head of Vermont's emergency 911 system is stepping down on Friday as the state makes changes to its calling system.

David Tucker, executive director of the E911 Board for about four years, had worked at the departments of Information and Innovation and Labor. He told the board about his resignation two months ago.

The Burlington Free Press reports Barbara Neal, emergency communications training coordinator, will be interim director.

Under Tucker, Vermont was the first state to offer full coverage of the text-to-911 message system.

In December, he said he had no regrets about signing an $11 million contract with FairPoint Communications to build Vermont's next-generation emergency calling system, less than three weeks before problems on FairPoint's network knocked much of the current 911 system out of service for hours.
