Vermont Mayors Want Universal Background Checks for Gun Buys

Eight mayors called for notification system to alert law enforcement when prohibited individuals try to purchase firearms

The Vermont Mayor's Coalition is urging the state to enact legislation to require universal background checks for anyone purchasing a gun in Vermont following the mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub.

The group - made up of Vermont's eight mayors - on Tuesday also called for the state to create a notification system to alert local law enforcement when prohibited individuals try to purchase firearms.
The mayors also want the state to ensure that people in Vermont who are adjudicated to be threat to themselves or others due to mental health conditions are properly reported to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System database.
The coalition called for state gun law reforms over three years ago after the 2012 elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
