Wareham, Mass. Man Faces Carjacking, Kidnapping Charges

(NECN: Nicole Jacobs) - Seventy-five-year-old Carol Widner believed she has always been a tough cookie. She proved that Thursday when she was carjacked from a Wareham Stop n’ Shop.

The suspect, 31-year-old Matthew Mullen, told Widner he had a gun and forced her to drive to a local Mayflower Bank. Unable to retrieve cash, he forced Widner to continue, until she found the perfect moment to make a run for it.

"I saw a police vehicle come out of the side street so I headed for the vehicle, slowed the car down and jumped out," Widner says.

But Mullen ran to another vehicle. Inside, was a husband, wife and their 2-month-old baby. Police caught up them, surrounded that vehicle and took Mullen in to custody.

He was arraigned in Wareham District Court Friday on multiple charges including kidnapping and carjacking.

Widner says although she was fearful, she felt sorry for guy she said was a "good looking kid."

"I just felt so bad for him that he would risk his life to do something that stupid," she says.

No one was injured in the ordeal. The 31 year old was held on $100,000 bail.
