The body of an older woman has been found after an early morning house fire in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

"It was pretty scary around here. From my house you could see the smoke, it was billowing, looked like daylight, that hour of the morning, gotta be pretty bad," Sharon Seed, who lives up the street from where the fire broke out, said.

"The whole back of the house was engulfed in flames... all you could see was smoke going up, and it was intense," she said.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 25 Sycamore Street just before 3 a.m. on Saturday and found flames coming from the back of the house and spreading to the roof.

New Bedford Deputy Fire Chief Paul Coderre Jr. told NBC10 the fire was contained to the one story rear apartment of the multi-family home and knocked down in about ten minutes.

Coderre said the heaviest charring was in the kitchen area of the apartment, but waht caused it is still under investigation.

The woman's body was found inside the home on the floor.

Her dog also died in the fire.

The medical examiner will determine how the woman died.

The cause of the fire and the name of the woman have not been released.
