Cold air blowing across the relatively warm ocean waters east of New England today is resulting in an air/water temperature difference of about 30 degrees, and that’s been sufficient, when coupled with a southward sagging cold front, to produce some ocean-enhanced snow showers and local bursts of snow in eastern Massachusetts.

The focus of these snow showers will shift southward through Plymouth County and Cape Cod today, eventually settling into Plymouth County through the evening, where greatest snowfall amounts are expected on the order of three to five inches, inside a much larger area of coastal Massachusetts that sees one to three inches.

Watch out for black ice and lingering snow on area roads this evening and overnight as flurries subside, last on the South Shore.

Tuesday brings a break in the action for most of us, aside from some snow showers in Vermont, then Tuesday evening snow showers lead to a heavier snow developing after midnight Tuesday.

Snow is expected to continue Wednesday for many and though enough mild air moves in from the south to change Cape Cod and southeast Massachusetts to rain, most of the remainder of New England will likely see delays, closings and cancellations with over half a foot possible for the interior.

Snow is likely to exit Wednesday evening, giving way to cool and quiet weather to end the week, before another thaw puts New England well into the 40s with some of us into the 50s this weekend.

Our exclusive Early Warning Weather 10-day forecast doesn’t keep it quite that warm into next week, but a thaw would continue.
