A Waterville, Maine, firefighter who jumped into action to help the victims of a 75-vehicle pileup on Interstate 95 in Maine last week has been honored by city officials.
Allen Nygren received an official mayoral recognition and a standing ovation at Tuesday's city council meeting
The Morning Sentinel reports that Mayor Nick Isgro said Nygren risked his own life and acted in a selfless manner to provide emergency medical care to injured motorists.
Nygren, an emergency medical technician, was off duty and on his way home after his shift on Feb. 25 when he came across the snowy crash scene in Etna. For five hours he performed triage. Although at least 17 people were hurt, there were no fatalities.
Nygren said he just did what any firefighter would have done.
