Retired Mass. State Police Dogs Up for Adoption

Massachusetts State Police are looking for forever homes for Alex and Klauss, two of their loyal and faithful dogs who are retiring

They've honorably and selflessly served Massachusetts State Police and Bay State citizens. Now, they are looking for their forever homes.

Two state police K-9s are retiring in the near future and are up for adoption.

State Police said in a Facebook post that their dogs generally continue to live with their trooper handlers after retirement, however a small number of dogs become available for adoption for various reasons. This is the case for Alex and Klauss.

Alex is an 8-year-old German Shepherd who has been trained in patrol and narcotics detection. Alex, originally from Slovakia, is available for adoption because he has reached a retirement age and his handler is unable to keep him due to having a new department dog and another police dog at his home.

Klauss is a 5-and-a-half-year-old Malinois mix who has been trained in patrol and human remains detection. Klauss is available for adoption because his handler, who already has a retired state police K-9 at his home, was promoted and left the K-9 Unit.

State police are looking for certain criteria and say that prospective owners will be rigorously vetted to ensure the dogs are going to loving, safe environments with prepared and capable owners. Police will be conducting interviews and running background checks on those interested.

The dogs will only be turned over when the department determines they have found the "right" person or family for each dog's forever home.

Interested? Contact K-9 Unit Commander Lt. Patrick Silva at Patrick.Silva@pol.state.ma.us in order to be placed on the availability list and considered for the vetting process.
