Hazmat Situation Reported at Newburyport District Court

The discovery of a white powdery substance in a courthouse bathroom in Massachusetts launched a hazmat response, according to first responders.

Newburyport Fire officials said firefighters responded to the scene at Newburyport District Court just after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, where an unknown powder was found in a plastic baggie in a women's restroom on the second floor.

Officials said they were following standard protocols for a Tier 1 HazMat response, including calling in additional teams and blocking off the area.

The building was not evacuated during the incident after it was determined that the substance, which remains unknown, was contained to the plastic bag, according to officials.

The substance has been sent to a state lab for testing.

A person whow as near the substance was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, according to Newburyport Fire Chief Christopher LeClair, but it doesn't appear that anyone fell ill or was injured as a result of the incident.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
