Man Charged With Setting Consecutive Fires at Occupied Homes

A Massachusetts man has been charged with intentionally setting two fires with people inside the homes, according to fire officials.

According to the state Department of Fire Services, 30-year-old New Bedford resident Jose DeBritto is facing charges in connection with the fires in the city.

The first fire broke out Wednesday night at a two-family home at 149 Myrtle St. Another fire started at a two-story home at 245 State St. Thursday morning.

"These fires were in occupied buildings which is very troubling and could easily have ended in tragedy," said New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes.

Officials, including Bristol district attorney, as well as local and state police are investigating the potential connection to other recent fires.

It’s not clear when DeBritto will appear in court or if he has an attorney.
