A Providence, Rhode Island, man who was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend's Chihuahua puppy has been sentenced to two years in prison.
The Providence Journal reports that Luis Laboy said in Superior Court Monday he loves animals. He said he's shocked "that all this happened."
Judge Netti C. Vogel called the killing "acts of a violent man who needs to pay for his crimes."
She accused him of killing the 12-week-old puppy, named Blacky, as an extension of his rage to his former girlfriend.
The 44-year-old Laboy also is barred from having any contact with his ex-girlfriend and is not allowed to own a dog for 15 years.
His girlfriend broke up with Laboy in 2012. He stopped by an apartment they had shared, killed the dog and assaulted her.
