Pipes Burst at 4 Schools Causing Widespread Damage

The drastic change in temperature has been destructive for Framingham's Public Schools

The dramatic changes in weather has caused pipes to burst in four Framingham, Massachusetts, schools.

According to the Director of Buildings and Grounds, the damage is so severe one one school, it may not be able to reopen after school vacation week.

The Framingham Director of Buildings and Grounds, Matthew Torti, said that three dozen buildings and grounds employees and several subcontractors were at McCarthy Elementary School this morning, which had the most damage.

Torti said that the district has has issues with pipes in the past, but never to this extent.

At this time, no dollar value has been placed on the damage.

The McCarthy Elementary School has 1-2 inches of water flooding in the B wing, which includes 9 classrooms. The sheet-rock, carpets, doors, bookcases, and furniture were all soaked.

King Elementary School is the next serious situation. Torti believes the building should be able to reopen Monday but the kitchen may not be available at that time. Meals would need to be brought in from another location if that was the case, explained Torti.

Framingham High School has water damage in the arts and music department but the auditorium was not damaged.

At Walsh Middle School, a 'frost-free' pipe burst in the guidance department, damaging a computer, phone, desk, bookcases, and files.

The Health Inspector needs to clear the schools before they can reopen after February school vacation.
