Police: Officer Breaking Up Large Fight Outside Bar Assaulted
    Worcester Police

A Massachusetts man is facing multiple charges after allegedly striking a police officer who was trying to end a fight involving 20 to 30 people outside a bar early Monday morning.

Worcester police said Gabriel Padin, 21, of Worcester, will be arraigned Tuesday on charges of attempt to disarm a police officer, assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace.

An officer responded to the area of the Compass Tavern on Harding Street just before 2 a.m. and observed a crowd fighting in the parking lot. The officer called for backup and ordered the crowd to disperse.

Padin allegedly continued to antagonize men in another group. The officer asked Padin’s friends to help him get in a car and away from the scene. However, Padin broke away and allegedly tried to fight other men, blocking cars in the process.

Police said the officer grabbed Padin, who then elbowed the officer multiple times in the chest and chin. A security guard from the Compass Tavern tried to help and was punched by Padin multiple times.

The officer took Padin to the ground and a struggle ensued during which the officer felt his belt being tugged and bystanders said Padin was attempting to reach for the officer’s gun.

The officer was able to punch Padin twice and break his grip on the gun. Backup arrived and Padin was placed under arrest.

He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Worcester District Court.

It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
