    What to Know

    • A sand dune collapsed on Saturday, temporarily shutting down Cahoon Hollow Beach and the popular Beachcomber restaurant.

    • This is the second sand dune collapse on the beach in less than a year.

    • The collapse on the Wellfleet beach happened after storms battered the Cape Cod town over the weekend.

A sand dune collapse shut down Cahoon Hollow Beach and closed a popular restaurant Saturday night in Wellfleet, Massachusetts.

The collapse, the second one on the beach in less than a year, happened after storms battered the Cape Cod town over the weekend.

“It wasn’t flat. It was very uneven,” said lifeguard Henry Hathaway. “There were still risks in different places where it could have collapsed more.”

Crews repaired the dune, which is also used as a walkway to the beach, by Sunday at 11 a.m. The Beachcomber also re-opened Sunday morning.

The popular restaurant on the Cape had to close on Saturday after a sand dune collapsed.

“It’s still not very pretty, but it’s good enough that we can use it for the beach and the patrons can come down and have a good day,” said Hathaway.

In August 2017, a sand dune collapsed near The Beachcomber’s parking lot, sending a car into the fallen dune.

“It was 10 times worse last year,” said lifeguard Adam Blake. “It split in the middle right there.”

No one was injured in either collapse.

Lifeguards said they’ll continue to monitor the dune since it could collapse again.
