One person was killed and one was seriously injured in a crash on Interstate 495 in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

The roll-over accident happened 6 p.m. Saturday on I-495 north, south of Main Street.

An 18-year-old woman, identified on Sunday morning as Methuen resident Alexis Spartz, was driving a 2004 Lincoln LS when she lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over and crash, according to a preliminary investigation.

The woman and her 19-year-old passenger, also from Methuen, were both trapped in the vehicle.

An off-duty Methuen firefighter extricated Spartz and began emergency medical treatment. Two off-duty state police officers also provided first aid at the scene.

The female passenger was extricated by the Haverhill Fire Department.

Both women were taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital with serious injuries.

Spartz was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the passenger was transported to Tufts Medical Center for further treatment of her injuries.

Spartz's passenger has not been identified.

It's not known at this time why the driver lost control of the vehicle. The crash remains under investigation.

No other information was immediately available.
